Sturgeon Bay's bats went quiet Tuesday at Bay Ship Field, as Oconto took both ends of a doubleheader 4-0 and 4-1.
It's a tough pill to swallow for a Clippers offense that had been rolling, putting up 11 runs in each of two wins in their last three games heading into Tuesday. Against Oconto, they managed just one run on eight combined hits across both games.
Roman Cantu was sharp in game one, spinning seven innings without allowing a run on five hits. Siggy Hansen pitched well enough in a tough luck loss, going five innings and allowing just two earned runs, but Oconto's seven walks and four stolen bases created too much trouble. Dane Helnore led Oconto with two hits and two RBIs.
Game two was more of the same. Oconto scored four times off Sturgeon Bay starter Rylan Ruenger and Joey Bailey's relief appearance delivered the finishing blow, striking out three in one and a third hitless innings to close it out. Bailey also drove in four runs from the first base spot. Drew Propsom had an RBI hit to account for Sturgeon Bay's only run.
The Clippers will travel to Crivitz at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
