Sturgeon Bay High School

Clippers' Tjernagel enjoying trip back to the bench

A return to the sidelines of the basketball court has been an enjoyable one for Sturgeon Bay girls' basketball head coach Dan Tjernagel.

Following his collegiate basketball career at Wisconsin Lutheran College, where he would be inducted into the school's athletic hall of fame in 2017, Tjernagel coached at several levels on his way to becoming Sturgeon Bay's superintendent. He had stuck mostly to youth levels until this year when he replaced Casey Harrington as the head coach of the girls' basketball team. Under his watch, the Clippers have doubled the amount of wins they had each of the last three seasons and had several other close calls. This is despite losing one of their top players, Tori Alger, to a devastating knee injury during the team's most successful stretch of basketball since December 2019. Tjernagel says it has been great to be more forward-facing with students at the school, something he does not always have a chance to do as the superintendent.

You can listen to our full interview with Tjernagel by clicking this link. The Lady Clippers will travel to Green Bay on Thursday to face NEW Lutheran. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m.
