Clippers girls take on Pioneers

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers girls' basketball team will welcome one of the favorites to capture the Packerland Conference when Sevastopol makes the short trip on Thursday.

The Clippers are amidst their first multi-game winning streak when they won games against Green Bay East and Gibraltar in January 2022. In their last game,

the team returned from over a dozen down to topple the visiting Two Raiders 46-39 in overtime. According to head coach Dan Tjernagel, the Clippers were down big early in the second half before whittling it down, setting the stage for Cady Carlson's heroic game-tying three-pointer. Two defensive stops later, the Clippers and the Raiders went into overtime with Sturgeon Bay outscoring their visitors 9-2 in the decisive extra frame. Carlson led the Clippers with 12 points, while Dasha Yeltysheva and Yarrow Goettelman each contributed nine points.

The Pioneers are 4-0 on the season and have not played since thrashing Southern Door last Friday 50-22. Naomi Rikkola continued her strong scoring season, averaging 17.7 points per game coming into the matchup with Southern Door. Rikkola would go for 14 of Sevastopol’s first-half points. Katie Spude was the second-highest scorer behind Rikkola’s 20, finishing with 11 points.

Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
