Sturgeon Bay sails past Oconto on The Clipper

A slow start to the game ended in 51-21 victory for Sturgeon Bay over Oconto Friday night

The two teams traded scores in the first quarter with the Blue Devils' Kyle Bowman tying the game on a 12-yard run after the Clippers' Danny Lodl opened the game with a five-yard touchdown pass to Bryce Plzak.

The game sunk into a lull until the final two minutes of the first half. A long punt by Hayden Tracy and a penalty put the Blue Devils' heels near their own endzone. David Zuelke caused the chaos that led to a safety to give the Clippers a 9-7 lead they would not give up. Following the safety kick, Zuelke scored from 12 yards out to extend the lead. The Blue Devils' Alex Fuller and the Clippers' Kordell Anderson would the end the half with dueling kickoff returns for touchdowns.

With a Fuller touchdown in between for the Blue Devils, Lodl would connect with Kaden Lettie for 24 yards and Plzak for 40 to keep the game at two scores. The Blue Devils' third quarter touchdown came with some controversy as a botched snap and fumble led to a scrum near the goal line. Fuller was able to somehow escape out of the pile and find an open receiver for an 80-yard passing play before punching it in.

The fourth quarter saw  the feel-good moment of the game when the Clippers' coaching staff called a run play on the goal line for lineman Dominic Tristani who scored a touchdown on his birthday.

Braylon La Roche capped off the scoring on the night with a two-yard touchdown run.

The Clippers return home next weekend for a date with Packerland Conference-leading Kewaunee.
