Sturgeon Bay pushes fall contact sports to spring

There will be no contact sports this fall at Sturgeon Bay. Athletic Director Todd Meikle shared the news with coaches Wednesday evening after the Sturgeon Bay School Board meeting voted to suspend the fall contact sports season. The decision affects football, volleyball, and boys soccer. Sports like swimming, cross country, and golf can have practices, but will not be able to participate in competitions until the COVID-19 activity level in Door County dips to the low or moderate level.

It was one of four options presented to the school board Wednesday. The other options included:

-Letting all fall sports continue under the recommended guidelines of the WIAA and the Packerland Conference. This would have been in step with what approved by Kewaunee and Southern Door earlier this week.

-Cancel all fall sports regardless of contact level and push them to the alternative spring season.

-Teams could have practiced this fall and have their games rescheduled if necessary to the spring if they could not play them this fall. This would not work for the swimming and golf teams, who have seen their Bay Conference members already start their seasons this week.

More communication from Sturgeon Bay School District is expected later on Thursday.
