Sevastopol boys basketball look to be Stronger Together for Lucia and Blake

This offseason, our coaches searched for a motto that could truly unite us — something simple but powerful to lean on when times get tough. We found those words in the phrase “Stronger Together.”

That message became even more meaningful this summer when Coach Brian Butch joined us to run a youth camp here in Sevastopol. As we talked, he shared that his young son, Blake, was once again battling a brain tumor and preparing for his second surgery. Just minutes later, I looked across the gym and saw the sister of another Sevastopol student, Lucia Ramirez, who is bravely fighting leukemia. In that moment — only five minutes before I placed the order for our “Stronger Together” team shirts — I knew this motto was meant to be more than just words for our program.

On December 9th, at our home game against Sturgeon Bay, we will honor both Blake Butch and Lucia Ramirez as we raise awareness and funds to help in the fight against childhood cancer. We invite our entire community to join us, wear the “Stronger Together” shirts, and fill the gym with support as we show that when we come together, we are truly stronger. All proceeds from the t-shirt sales will go to Blake and Lucia.

BLAKE'S STORY

In 2021, just before turning two years old, Blake Butch was diagnosed with a brain tumor. In May of 2022, he bravely underwent surgery, and doctors were able to remove the tumor. Sadly, in 2025, Blake was diagnosed again with another tumor, and he now faces a second surgery this September. Through it all, Blake has shown incredible courage and strength beyond his years. He recently had another surgery and is currently in recovery.

LUCIA'S STORY

In March of 2025, while in second grade at Sevastopol, Lucia Ramirez was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. After only a month of treatment, her diagnosis was changed from standard risk to high risk, leading to months of intense chemotherapy, steroids, lumbar punctures, and bone marrow tests. She has endured multiple hospital stays due to infections and dangerously low immune counts. Currently, Lucia is in a difficult treatment phase that includes high-dose methotrexate, lumbar punctures, vincristine every two weeks, and nightly chemotherapy pills. Despite all she has faced, Lucia has fought with courage and determination, working hard to regain strength and enjoy the moments of childhood she so deserves.
