The Sevastopol baseball team pounded out 14 hits en route to a 12-8 (eight innings) win over Port Edwards in its WIAA Tournament opener.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to a Bo Tanck triple and a wild pitch, only to see the Blackhawks push across three runs in their half of the inning. The two teams would share a similar inning in the third inning, with the Pioneers scoring three runs and the Blackhawks adding two more. The game would play out that way until the eighth inning the Blackhawks had no answer for the Pioneers' four-run rally in the top of the frame. RBI doubles by Tanck, Andrew Wiesner, and Tyler Grooters, along with a run-scoring groundout off the bat of Aidan Isaksen, proved to be too much to overcome, even though the Blackhawks had the game-tying run at the plate before the game ended.
Tanck had three hits and three RBI to pace the Pioneers while Grooters went 4-5 with two RBI and Logan Schuh chipped in with two hits and one RBI. Pioneers pitching struck out a combined 14 batters in Thursday's game, including 10 from Wiesner.
The Pioneers will hit the road again on Tuesday to face #3 Iola-Scandinavia with a chance to play either Gibraltar/Washington Island or Assumption on Wednesday.
