Pioneers softball sinks Clippers early

The Sevastopol Pioneers softball team hung crooked numbers in each of the first four innings en route to a 13-2 five-inning win over Sturgeon Bay on Thursday.

The Pioneers scored five times in the first inning thanks to run-scoring hits from Naomi Rikkola and Brynn Schartner. The two teams exchanged two-run rallies in the second inning, with the Clippers taking advantage of a bases-loaded walk and a passed ball, while the Pioneers cashed in on a flyout and an RBI single by Adison Sawyer. After stretching their lead two more runs in the third, the Pioneers settled things in the fourth inning with four more runs, powered by a Braylyn Staats double and a Kayla Ranly single.

Auna Anderson's single in the second inning was the Clippers' lone hit of the day. Annika Schoeneman took the loss from the circle for the Clippers, allowing 12 runs (5 ER) on nine hits and four walks with one strikeout. Leah Schopf and Addison Schauske teamed up on the win, combining to allow two runs (1 ER) on one hit and four walks while striking out nine. Sienna Cain and Sadie Rikkola posted two hits while Naomi Rikkola and Scharnter had multi-RBI days.

The Pioneers are back in action Friday against Southern Door.
