Pioneers girls cruise past Vikings on 105.1 The GOAT

The Sevastopol Pioneer girls basketball team jumped out to a 15-0 lead and never looked back, beating Gibraltar 78-28 on Tuesday night.

Kayla Ranly and Ella Volkmann helped lead the offensive assault early in the half with productive drives to the hoop and timely three-pointers to stake the Pioneers to the early lead. Their defense was just as strong, forcing the Vikings into early turnovers and quick shots. Megan Schar broke the drought on a lay-up, but it was one of just four made field goals in the half as the Pioneers took a 50-11 lead into the break.

The Vikings and the Pioneers traded baskets early in the half, but the Pioneers' depth proved to be too much as three players reached double figures compared to just one for the Vikings. Nine different Pioneers scored, seven of which scored five or more points. They were led by Ranly's 16 points, Naomi Rikkola chipping in 15 points, and Ella Volkmann adding 12 points. Sadie Rikkola and Addison Schauske missed double figures, scoring nine and eight points, respectively. For the Vikings, the Pioneers' defense held Mikala Gorham scoreless until the first half's final minutes. She was able to find more of an offensive groove in the second half to finish with a team-high 10 points. Celeste Jauregui scored eight points, and Schar added three points. Abby Jarosh, Anna Jarosh, and Josie Martin each added a pair.

The Vikings are back in action against Southern Door on Thursday, while the Pioneers are back in action on Friday with a showdown against Kewaunee.
