Sevastopol High School

Lady Pioneers begin regional title defense on 96.7 WBDK

The Sevastopol Pioneers look to defend their regional championship from a year ago when they open against St. Thomas Aquinas Academy in Institute.

The #3-seeded Pioneers are 20-3 and carry an eight-game winning streak into their home gym. Their last loss was to Oconto on January 25th, a defeat they would avenge weeks later with a 10-point victory. The offense has run through Naomi Rikkola, who leads the team with 18.9 ppg, 6.9 rpg, and 3.0 apg. Kayla Ranly has complemented Rikkola with 14.3 ppg. The Pioneers were dealt a dose of bad news last week when Libby Ash was sidelined with a leg injury, joining fellow senior teammate Sam Herrell on the bench.

The Cavaliers are on the opposite side of the spectrum, going 2-18 on the season and 0-16 in their conference. They did end their regular season on a good note with a 39-36 win over Stockbridge on Saturday in Oshkosh. No Cavaliers player averages more than eight points per game as the team was held to under 20 points 16 times and to single digits twice.

Bryan Mazur and Tim Ash will have the call on 96.7 WBDK and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning at 6:45 p.m., followed by the opening tip at 7 p.m.
