Pioneers girls outlast Blue Devils to stay in conference race

The Sevastopol Pioneers girls' basketball team can clinch a share of the Packerland Conference title with a win on Thursday after beating fellow conference leader Oconto 49-39 on Monday night.

The game was tight throughout, with the closing minutes of each half presenting opportunities for the Pioneers to extend their lead.

The Pioneers' Naomi Rikkola and the Blue Devils' Addi Viestenz showed why they are All-Packerland Conference performers, scoring 18 points for their respective teams. They did it differently, though, as Viestenz did it from the field, and Rikkola was clutch at the free throw, making 9-of-10 on the night.

Rikkola was complemented by Kayla Ranly's 10 points and nine points from Libby Ash, who drilled three three-pointers in the first half. The Blue Devils countered with eight points from Natalie Schuleter and six from Emilee Banker.

The Pioneers play Peshtigo on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and can get a share of the conference title with a win and capture it outright with a win and a Kewaunee loss to Algoma.
