Sevastopol girls down NEW, face Wabeno-Laona Saturday

The Sevastopol girls' basketball team earned their second week's win on Friday, beating NEW Lutheran 53-32.

The Pioneers led by nine points at the break and only extended their lead from there despite only four points from Naomi Rikkola, who broke the 1,000-point mark with a 36-point performance a week ago. Kayla Ranly led the Pioneers with 15 points, while Libby Ash sank three three-pointers to add 11 points. Three others chipped in at least five points. Lexie Meerstein poured in 14 points, and Ingrid Beaumont added 10 points to the loss for the Blazers.

The Pioneers will travel to Oshkosh to face Wabeno-Laona as a part of a Wisconsin Herd triple-header that includes a game between the schools' boys' teams. A year removed from an appearance in the state tournament, the Rebels are 14-6 on the season and have won six of their last seven games. That includes a 44-34  win over Coleman on Tuesday. Tip-off for the girls' game is 1 p.m. while the boys play at 2:30 p.m.
