Sevastopol High School

Sevastopol shifts football to the spring

Sevastopol High School found itself without an opponent again and has opted to move the rest of its football season to the alternate period this spring. Last week, two opponents canceled their game against Sevastopol. The Pioneers were initially scheduled to play Auburndale in a return match from their Week One contest. That was switched to a road game at Wausaukee, which was called off on Thursday.

The WIAA had set a deadline of this past Saturday for schools to notify the governing body of their intention to move to the alternate fall schedule in early 2021. Sevastopol held a team meeting and chose not to pursue that action as they had three games slated through early November. This Friday’s game had to be canceled early in the week due to a scheduling conflict. Athletic Director Brooke Tanck says that the WIAA gave Lena’s original opponent, Gillett, clearance to resume play after COVID-19 restrictions were lifted. Since Gillett is in the same conference as Lena, the WIAA said that matchup takes precedence. Sevastopol left without another game, petitioned the WIAA to allow them to opt for the alternate schedule two days late, and that appeal was granted.

Seven total games are allowed between fall and spring. Sevastopol is 1-1 and eligible for up to five contests beginning in March.
