A tale of two halves lifted Luxemburg Casco past Merrill in Level 1 of the WIAA Division 3 postseason, as the Spartans won 42-14 to extend their season on 104.1 WRLU.
The Bluejays took the opening possession of the game and marched down the field, finding the endzone on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Cole Rudie to Brody Klebenow. The Spartans were forced to punt on their opening possession, but forced a Merrill punt on the ensuing drive. Facing 4th and 2 on the opening play of the 2nd quarter, Eli Derenne hit paydirt, taking a keeper 32-yard carry for 6. Wyatt Bailey started a perfect night of PAT kicks, tying the game. Merrill went back in front on its next drive as Rudie connected with Ryker Remington for a 17-yard pitch-and-catch for the score. From there though, it was all Spartans. LC tied the game just before half, as Ben Klass scored from 1 yard out with Bailey hitting the PAT. The Blue Jays tried to take a big shot in the waning seconds of the half, but it was intercepted by Derenne.
Derenne took the opening kick of the second half into Blue Jays territory, but the drive stalled out and gave Merrill excellent field position to start the half. Fortunately for LC, the momentum swung back their way in a big way. Talon Tassoul recovered a Blue Jays fumble, and shortly after Derenne scored again, this time from 14 yards, giving the Spartans their first lead. Derenne completed the hat trick, scoring for the 3rd time, carrying from 50 yards out after a Blue Jays punt. The Spartans forced a turnover on downs on the following drive, and Klass scored on back-to-back possessions to seal the game for LC.
Luxemburg Casco will continue its season next week, traveling to #1 seed Port Washington, who took down South Milwaukee 51-7. Eric Fischer and Ramsay Thompson will have the call on 104.1 WRLU.
