Spartans toppled by Freedom on 104.1 WRLU

Category: Local Sports

Luxemburg Casco's winning streak came to an end on Friday as the top ranked Freedom Irish rolled to its 8th straight win, taking down the Spartans 45-6 as heard on 104.1 WRLU.

The Spartans defense forced an early turnover, as Joey Jeanquart intercepted his first of two passes on the contest's opening possession. A good return gave Luxemburg Casco excellent field position, but the Spartans could not find pay dirt.  A turnover on downs pinned Freedom deep in their own territory, but the Irish struck first. Axzil Eggert broke a pair of tackles to spring free for a 75 yard touchdown, his first of five on the evening. On the Spartans' ensuing drive, Luxemburg Casco moved down the field, but a fumble gave the ball back to Freedom in LC territory. Shortly after, Owen Henkel connected with Charlie Micke for a 32 yard touchdown pass.  Luxemburg Casco's next drive stalled out, leading to a punt that went out of bounds just a few yards downfield, giving the Irish a short field, capped off with another Eggert score.  Freedom got another stop defensively, and marched downfield.  The Spartans defense held enough to force a Cal Calhoon 32 yard field attempt, which split the uprights to give the Irish a 24-0 advantage.  Jeanquart returned the ensuing kickoff past midfield, and the Spartans offense got rolling.  Luxemburg Casco got on the board with a Ben Klass 1 yard touchdown, attempting a two point conversion, but were stopped, leaving the score at 24-6.  Unfortunately, Freedom was able to answer back quickly, with Eggert rushing from 4 yards out.  The teams exchanged possessions for the remainder of the half, highlighted by an Ethan Werner interception, but neither team was able to add points, sending the game to the break at 31-6.

The third quarter started with a defensive stalemate for much of the period, with Jeanquart hauling in his second interception of the game. That is, until Eggert found the end zone from 20 yards out for his 4th touchdown.  LC was turned away on the offensive end, leading to one last Eggert score to bring running clock and close the game.

The win gives Freedom at least a share of the North Eastern Conference championship, which they can win outright in the regular season finale next week at Sheboygan Falls. Luxemburg Casco will close the regular season, hosting Denmark next Friday night. We will carry that game on 104.1 WRLU.
