The Luxemburg-Casco girls volleyball team begins their NEC title defense on Thursday with a home match against Wrightstown.

 

In their last action, the Spartans posted a strong second-place finish in the Beast of the Northeast Tournament over the weekend. On Friday, the Spartans beat Pulaski 26-24, 25-20 and St. Mary’s Springs 25-13, 25-12 before falling to Edgar 21-25, 25-23, 7-15 in pool play. In bracket play on Saturday, the Spartans beat Manitowoc Lutheran 25-14, 25-21; Holmen 25-22, 25-21; and D.C Everest 21-25, 25-22, 15-4, before losing to Mosinee 14-25, 25-22, 10-15 in the championship match. Leading the way for the Spartans over the weekend were Claire Schleis (85 assists, 28 kills, 21 digs), Stella Schleis (48 assists, 24 digs), Aubrey Frey (91 kills, 46 digs, 11 aces), and Jenna Annoye (77 digs, 8 aces).

 

While the team returns many contributors from last year's state semi-final squad, they did graduate several others, including All-State team members Rylan Kaminski and Alayna Deprez. Head coach Jeff Frey said during last week's Fall Sports Preview at the Rendezvous of Luxemburg that you can never fully replace players like that, but he believes his team is up to the task of doing its best.

 

 

The Spartans face a Tigers squad that is 3-9 on the season, including a sweep at the hands of Brillion on Tuesday.
