The Luxemburg-Casco football team captured a big win in the standings but a signifcant loss on the depth chart Friday night as they beat Kewaskum 37-27 in Luxemburg.
The seesaw battle began right away in the first quarter with the Spartans defense forcing a three-and-out and responded a touchdown drive capped off by a two-yard run by Eli Derenne.
The two teams traded empty possessions before the Indians got on the scoreboard with a one-yard touchdown run by Landon Scheel. It was a shortlived celebration as Derenne scored on a 84-yard touchdown run to make it 14-6. After Scheel scored his second touchdown of the half, the Spartans were forced to punt the ball away to give the Indians a chance to stealing the lead before the break. A Joseph Jeanquart interception on defense and his reception on offense foiled those plans as the Spartans were able to stretch their lead to 17-12 before halftime on a long field goal by Wyatt Bailey.
The Indians eventually took the lead early in the third quarter courtesy of another Scheel touchdown run, but Derenne would score touchdowns on consecutive possessions to give the Spartans a 30-19 lead entering the fourth quarter. Indians quarterback Eli Ogi connected with Jace Wichtoski to make it 30-27, but one-yard score by Ben Klass put the game out of reach.
The Spartans clinched the game thanks to back-to-back sacks by Lane Ledvina to take the ball back with just over a minute to go. Disaster struck late for the Spartans however when Tatum Klaubauf got rolled up on the near sideline as they tried to run the clock out, suffering a lower body injury that required him to get carted off and ended the game early.
Derenne led the office with 16 rushes for 215 yards while going 14/19 through the air for 197 yards and a pick. Klaubauf was the leading receiver, grabbing seven passes for 98 yards.
The Spartans are back in action on Friday when they travel to Kewaunee to face the Storm. Eric Fischer will have the call of that game on 104.1 WRLU beginning at 6:45 p.m. followed by the kickoff at 7 p.m. The football team will be featured at Wednesday's Fall Sports Preview hosted by the Rendezvous of Luxemburg.
