Spartans softball fall short against Vikings

In a softball game that resembled a tug of war, Luxemburg-Casco came up one run short Thursday night, falling to Denmark 5-4.

The Spartans scored first in the second inning on a two-out RBI single by Karsyn Walyczyk to make it 1-0, but the Vikings answered with three runs in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead. Luxemburg-Casco tied the game in the bottom of the third courtesy of back-to-back RBI doubles by Stella Schleis and Alayna Deprez to make it 3-3. After the Vikings regained the lead in the fourth inning with two runs, the Spartans could only answer with one of their own when Jasmine Jandrin singled home Walyczyk to cut the deficit to 5-4.

The Spartans had baserunners in every inning after that point, including two in the seventh, but could not come up with the hit needed to extend the game — if not win it outright.

Deprez led the team offensively by going 2 for 3 with an RBI. Seven other Spartans recorded a hit, while Schleis, Walyczyk and Jandrin each drove in a run.

The Spartans return to action Friday when they play a doubleheader at Wrightstown beginning at 4 p.m.
