Leads of 3-0 and 6-2 proved to be unsafe for the Luxemburg-Casco baseball team as they lost to Marinette on the road on Thursday 7-6.
After two scoreless innings, the Spartans pushed across three runs in the top of the third inning when Ethan Werner cleared the bases with a double. The Marines got two of those runs back in their half of the frame on two run-scoring outs. It stayed that way until the sixth inning when the Spartans added another three runs courtesy of an error, a passed ball, and a Gavin Lax single. The Spartans found themselves in trouble right away in the seventh by loading the bases on two walks and a hit by pitch. After a single, a bases-loaded walk, and an error made it a one-run game, the Spartans were able to get to within one out of winning the game. A bases-loaded walk and error later, the Spartans had dropped their first game of the season.
Lax went 2-3 with an RBI while four other Spartans registered one knock with Werner delivering the biggest blow with three RBI. Ethan Engum took the loss in relief for the Spartans, allowing five runs (2 ER) and three walks with no strikeouts across 0.2 innings pitched.
The Spartans are back in action on Saturday when they face Oconto Falls at Capital Credit Union Park in Ashwaubenon at 4:30 p.m. Eric Fischer will have the call on 104.1 WRLU beginning at 4:15 p.m.
