Spartans baseball make second attempt to face Clippers

After their first matchup was a wash, Luxemburg-Casco and Sturgeon Bay will try to face each other again in Luxemburg on Monday.

A six-run first inning provided all the offense the Luxemburg-Casco baseball team would need in an 8-1 victory over St. Mary Catholic in Neenah on Thursday. The Spartans opened the game with three straight singles, including a run-scoring hit by Hudson Billings. Two errors allowed two more Spartans to reach base before singles from Myles Jandrain and Tatum Klaubauf and a fielder's choice by Bryce Piesler helped the team pile on the Zephyrs. Jandrain went 2-4 with two RBI while Ethan Werner also boasted a two-hit evening. Klaubauf (2), Piesler, Jacob Coisman, Billings, and Noah Chervenka also collected RBI in the Spartans victory that was aided by five Zephyrs errors. Chervenka and Ethan Engum kept the Zephyrs in check on the mound, combining to strike out 10 batters while allowing just one run on two hits.

The Clippers dropped their season opener in Shawano on Friday 7-4. They took an early 2-0 lead thanks to an RBI double from Steven Prescott in the second inning and a run-scoring single in Jack Higginbotham. The Hawks took control of the contest in the middle innings, scoring seven of the next eight runs. The Clippers managed single tallies in the final two innings, but it was not enough to get over the hump. Higginbotham and Prescott each had two hits while four different Clippers registered RBI in the loss. Siggy Hansen suffered the loss on the mound, allowing four runs (4 ER) on three hits and two walks in one inning of work.

First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.
