It should have been the fifth game of the season, but the wait was worth it as the Spartans took down Southern Door 10-0 behind a big second inning and a no-hitter from pitcher Gavin Lax, as heard on 104.1 WRLU.
Lax started the gem with two strikeouts in the top of the first inning. When Luxemburg-Casco came to bat, Ethan Dachelet led off the season with a single and came around to score on a groundout by Hudson Billings. Two more strikeouts by Lax in the top of the second set the stage for the Spartans to build on their lead.
A Southern Door error allowed Bryce Piesler to reach, followed by a Lax single. Myles Jandrin drove in Piesler on a groundout, and Lagan Whipp added another run with a groundout. With two outs and the bases empty, a pair of walks and two Eagles errors loaded the bases as Luxemburg-Casco tacked on four more runs before the final out of the inning.
Southern Door’s lone baserunner reached on a dropped third strike that trickled to the backstop, allowing Kody Wagaman to reach. Lax forced a groundout on the next batter to retire the side.
The Spartans added three more runs in the bottom of the third, with hits from Jandrin and Tatum Klaubauf, extending the lead into mercy-rule territory. Lax tallied three more strikeouts en route to a 10-strikeout no-hitter, earning the win in the season opener. Mac Hoffman took the loss for Southern Door.
Luxemburg-Casco is scheduled to travel to St. Mary Catholic on Thursday for a 6 p.m. contest, weather permitting. Southern Door is scheduled to host Kiel on Saturday morning in its next game.
