After spending a year on the Luxemburg-Casco dance team, Jakayla Steinhorst decided to enter the family business of wrestling.
The Steinhorst and Wery names have long been associated with the sport in Kewaunee County, a calling Steinhorst had put aside until last year. Now, she is blazing her own path after qualifying for her first sectional meet last weekend with a second-place finish.
Being a girl and a lightweight does not always provide a consistent number of matches throughout the year, leading Steinhorst to find other ways to gain the experience needed to be successful.
As Steinhorst prepares to continue her postseason journey this weekend — with a chance to wrestle under the Kohl Center lights at the WIAA Individual State Tournament next month — she said she is happy to see her hard work paying off.
Steinhorst joins teammates Evelyn Lange and Kiley Georgel, along with Kewaunee’s Arianna Niemojuski, at the Waupaca Sectional on Friday. Competition begins at 5 p.m.
