Luxemburg Casco ended their regular season with the daunting task of traveling to Freedom to face another top team in the North Eastern Conference, falling 33-20.
The Spartans started fast, finding the endzone on the opening drive of the game, as Brayden Loritz ran in from 9 yards out. Jacob Walton nailed the extra point giving LC a 7-0 lead. The two teams exchanged punts, before Freedom got on the board with a 7 yard touchdown pass from Owen Henkel to Quinn Brennenstuhl to knot the game up 7-7. The Spartans grabbed the lead back on their first play with the ball after the ensuing kickoff on a 71 yard touchdown pass from Eli Derenne to Mason Trimberger. Freedom answered back with a lengthy drive capped off by another Henkel touchdown pass, this time to Aidan Aerts for 27 yards. Once again the score was tied up at 14-14. The Irish got a stop defensively and kicked a 30 yard field goal in the final seconds of the quarter to take a 17-14 lead into halftime.
Freedom started the second half with the ball and drove down the field again, with the Spartans defense bending but not breaking, holding the Irish to another field goal attempt. Nolan Phillips nailed a 35 yarder to extend the lead to 20-14. Luxemburg was unable to grab the lead back on its ensuing possession., turning the ball over on downs deep in Irish territory. Freedom was once again able to extend the lead, this time on a 43 yard run by George Van Schyndel. Luxemburg would ultimately be held scoreless for most of the second half, until Trimberger was able to haul in his 2nd touchdown, but by then, the Spartans trailed 33-20 after a Phillips touchdown catch on the previous Freedom drive put the game out of reach.
Luxemburg Casco will be in the WIAA Division 3 playoffs, and now wait to find out their opponent, which will be revealed Saturday morning. Stay tuned to the NEW Radio Sports Network for the announcement.
