Spartans tame Tigers on 104.1 WRLU

Luxemburg-Casco earned a massive win within the North Eastern Conference, taking down Wrightstown 21-3 as heard on 104.1 WRLU.

Two very similar teams, with a run-heavy focus and great defenses, clashed, with each defense stopping the opposition on their respective opening drives. Luxemburg Casco got on the board first, forced a defensive stop, then marched down the field on the legs of Eli Derenne.  A pair of big runs from the quarterback bookended the drive, capped off with a 20-yard scamper for a score.  Jacob Walton made the kick to put the Spartans up 7-0.  The teams exchanged stops throughout the first half, and the game went to halftime with the same score.

Starting the half with the ball, Luxemburg-Casco went down the field before a pair of penalties backed the Spartans up to 4th and 12 from the 32.  Eli Derenne chucked a deep ball to Mason Trimberger in the endzone, but Trimberger could not haul in the pass, and Wrightstown would take over.  The Tigers pieced together their best drive of the ballgame, picking their way down the field, earning a 1st and goal at the Spartans' 9.  A holding penalty backed Wrightstown up, and the Tigers could not reach the endzone, settling for a Daniel Buntin 34-yard field goal, making the score 7-3.  Luxemburg Casco responded strongly, as Derenne found Tatum Klaubauf for a couple of first downs through the air, before Cam Dorner struck for a 29-yard touchdown run. Another Walton PAT kick put the Spartans up 14-3.  Dorner wasn’t done there.  Following the kickoff, on Wrightstown’s first offensive play, Dorner chased down Buntin, and just before completing the sack, Buntin threw the ball into the ground for an intentional grounding penalty, pinning the Tigers back to 2nd and 32.  Julian Bailey sacked Buntin on the next play to back them up further.  A minimal 3rd down gain forced a Wrightstown punt, which Dorner returned to the Tigers 42.  Brayden Loritz took over in the Spartans' backfield and picked his way down the field on three read-option keepers, scoring a 1-yard touchdown. Walton drilled the ensuing PAT kick to put Luxemburg Casco up 21-3 with just 1:38 left in regulation.  The Tigers would try to pull off a miracle, but it was quickly snuffed out after a Joey Jeanquart interception sealed the game.

Coach Seering met us on the field after the broadcast and credited his players' resilience amid some adversity and mistakes. You can see the full interview below.

The Spartans move to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in North Eastern Conference play.  Luxemburg-Casco returns home next week for an NEC matchup against the Sheboygan Falls Falcons.
