A five-run rally nearly spoiled the day for the Luxemburg-Casco baseball team, but they were still able to secure the 8-6 win over their STH 54 rivals Algoma on Monday.
Scoreless through two innings, the Spartans did the bulk of their damage in the third inning when the scored five times, highlighted by a RBI single from Landon Derenne and a sacrifice fly from Jacob Coisman. The two teams traded runs in the fourth inning before a Reagan Doell double scored two more in the fifth. That is how it would stay until the seventh inning when the Wolves staked their claim to a possible non-conference victory. Sparked by three errors, Jacob Massey's single made it a five-run frame with the tying run on base. An Alex Gonzalez to Carson Blohowiak ended the threat and gave the Spartans the nerve-wracking victory.
Ethan Werner posted two hits and one RBI while six other Spartans tallied at least one knock. Massey registered a two-hit game for the Wolves, accounting for two of the three RBI.
The Spartans are back in action on Tuesday when they play Wrightstown at home (4:30 p.m.), while the Wolves head north to face Gibraltar (5 p.m.).
