The Luxemburg-Casco softball team used a strong start by pitcher Erin Cherovsky to top Oconto Falls 2-1 in its first game of the season.
After both teams were scoreless in the first two innings, the Spartans cracked the scoreboard first when Rachel Kaminski stole two bases and scored on an error by the catcher to make 1-0. The two teams traded runs in the sixth inning when the Panthers' Amelia Danielczak scored on a sacrifice fly to tie the game only to see the Spartans get the lead back when Riley Westlund scored on a passed ball.
Erin Cherovsky went the distance from the circle, allowing three hits and one unearned run while striking out five Panthers. Her counterpart, the Panthers' Randi Metzler, was nearly as good by allowing five hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out four across six innings. Kaminski, Westlund, Alayna Deprez, Kacie Jorgensen, and Kate Van Ess registered the hits for the Spartans.
The Spartans are back in action today at home against New Holstein. First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.
