The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans battled with the Wrightstown Tigers but fell to one of the top ranked teams in the state 28-14 Friday night.
Before a huge Veterans Night crowd in Luxemburg, the Spartans jumped out to the early lead with a one-yard touchdown run by running back Andrew Klass to make it 7-0 after the PAT.
Wrightstown responded with a long drive that was capped with 24-yard touchdown run by quarterback Trevor Vande Hey on the first play of the second quarter. A two-point attempt failed and the score remained 7-6.
Luxemburg-Casco then went on a 16-play drive that saw them convert on three fourth down situations, capped with a touchdown by Brayden Loritz on a one-yard quarterback keeper. Jacob Walton’s extra point gave the Spartans a 14-6 lead with 3:50 left in the half.
A 20-yard touchdown pass from Vande Hey to Daniel Buntin with 1:05 left in the half, and a two-point conversion tied the game up at 14-14 at halftime.
After a scoreless third quarter, Wrightstown took the lead for good on a 14 yard pass from Vande Hey to Kaden Colwell with 8:50 left in the game.
The Spartans had a chance to stop the Tigers late, but after a huge third-down conversion at the Wrightstown 39 yard-line, Tiger running back Aiden Humphries exploded for a 61-yard run to put the game away with 1:34 left.
Wrightstown stays undefeated (2-0, 4-0 overall), while Luxemburg-Casco is now 1-1 in the NEC and 1-3 overall. The Spartans face Sheboygan Falls next Friday night.
L-C Coach Neil Seering was proud of his team’s effort and credited Wrightstown in just making a few more plays late in the game.
