Spartans crush Kiel in playoffs on 96.7 WBDK

The #2 seeded Luxemburg-Casco Spartans crushed the #3 seeded Kiel Raiders 41-0 in a WIAA Division 4 Level 2 playoff Friday night in Luxemburg.

The Spartans impressively took the opening drive 61 yards and scored on a 17-yard pass from quarterback Max Ronsman to running back Cameron Dorner to take a 7-0 lead with 4:27 left in the first quarter.

After an interception by Ronsman on the Raiders’ next drive, the Spartans drove 92 yards, benefiting from a fourth down offside penalty by Kiel that gave the Spartans a first down when they were ready to punt.  Ronsman’s one-yard plunge made the score 14-0 with 8:41 left in the second quarter.

The Spartan's defense came up with an incredible goal-line stance with under a minute left in the half.  With first-and-goal at the one-yard line, The Raiders could not pound the ball into the end zone turning the ball over on downs with 15 second left in the second quarter, keeping the score at 14-0.

The Spartans put the game away in the third quarter scoring on a 42-yard scamper by Ronsman and a two-yard run by Chris VanderWielen.

Andrew Klass finished the scoring off for the Spartans with a 4-yard run and a 43-yard touchdown run from the wildcat formation with 6:13 left in the game.

Raider quarterback Cade Voelker, who had tossed 23 touchdowns this season coming into the game, could not get anything going against an aggressive Spartan defense led by Braeden Schley who had numerous plays of tackles-for-loss.

Kiel finishes the season 8-2, while the Spartans (10-1) will take on #1 and undefeated Two Rivers next Friday night on the road in a Division 4 Level 1 playoff showdown.

The pregame is set for 6:45 p.m. on 96.7 WBDK, with kick-off at 7 p.m. from Two Rivers High School.  Paul Schmitt and Tim Kowols will have the play-by-play of the game, which will also be streamed on New Radio Sports Network.
