Spartans rally to spoil Freedom's homecoming

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans overcame a 14 point deficit to beat the Freedom Irish 24-14 to stay perfect in the North Eastern Conference play.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Irish scored on two Drew Kortz touchdown passes in the second quarter to take a 14-0 lead in front of a frenzied homecoming crowd.

The Spartans would respond with a touchdown before halftime on a 14-yard touchdown run by quarterback Max Ronsman to make it 14-7 with 2:51 left in the second quarter.

Taking the opening kick in the second half, the Spartans drove downfield and settled for a 28-yard field goal by Trace Shoenebeck to cut the lead to 14-10 for Freedom with 7:10 left in the third quarter.  The Spartans would then take the lead for the first time on a nine-yard touchdown scramble by Ronsman with 35 seconds left in the third quarter, making the score 17-14.

The Spartans struck quickly after a turnover on a 47-yard strike from Ronsman to Cameron Dorner making it 24-14 with 11:08 to go in the fourth quarter.

Freedom would mount a couple of long drives but were eventually turned away by the Spartan defense and two key penalties that called back two big plays by the Irish late in the game.

Schoenebeck sealed the victory for Luxemburg-Casco with an interception with 1:55 left in the fourth quarter as the Spartans remain undefeated in the conference.

Luxemburg-Casco (4-0, 5-1 overall) will now play Denmark next Thursday in their homecoming game.
