Spartans beat Clippers behind Derenne's masterpiece on 104.1 WRLU

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans rode a stellar pitching performance from sophomore Landon Derenne to beat the Sturgeon Bay Clippers 4-1 in non-conference baseball action Friday evening in Luxemburg.  Derenne, making his varsity pitching debut for the Spartans, retired the first 17 batters he faced before hitting a batter in the sixth inning.  He then allowed a hit and a run in the seventh before completing a gem of a game.

The Spartans started the scoring with an RBI single from Jacob DeGrave in the first inning before breaking the game open with a three-run fifth inning behind RBI singles by Tyler DeGrand and Brady Massey.

Clipper starting pitcher Bryce Plzak went four-plus innings, allowed three runs in the loss, and picked up the only hit for Sturgeon Bay.

Both teams have little time to rest as Luxemburg-Casco (3-3) now travels to Waupaca in the NEC for a doubleheader, while Sturgeon Bay (1-5) will also play a twin bill at home against NEW Lutheran in Packerland Conference action.

The next scheduled broadcast on 104.1 WRLU of Luxemburg-Casco baseball is next Thursday when the Spartans travel to Two Rivers to play the Purple Raiders.  The game will also be streamed on New Radio Sports Network with pregame at 4:15 p.m. and the first pitch at 4:30 p.m.
