Luxemburg-Casco High School

Legacy continues to build for Spartans wrestling

For the Luxemburg-Casco wrestling program, this past weekend was more about the present and the future than the past.

The varsity squad captured their 13th team state title in school history on Saturday at the UW Field House, beating Evansville 63-9 in the semifinal and topping Prairie du Chien 37-20 in the final. Much like they did in 2018 when they returned to the mountaintop for the first time since 2013, it meant picking themselves off the mat after being dealt with disappointment the year before. Last year, the Spartans fell to Amery 36-30 as they split the seven matches. Knowing the wrestlers that would be back for an encore, head coach Chas Treml said he knew they would be back and they would not let that happen again.

Treml said the support from the Luxemburg-Casco wrestling family and the entire community has been important to their run. From filling up nearly half the bleachers for the team sectional in Freedom to the large crowds at the spur-of-the-moment championship parade through Luxemburg, Treml says it shows how special this community is when it comes to wrestling.

Despite losing a number of important wrestlers due to graduation, the pipeline is still full of talent. This past weekend, Luxemburg-Casco's middle school wrestlers won their fourth straight state title while the elementary school team finished the year as the state runner-up.
