Spartans top Algoma on 96.7 WBDK

On a special evening at the Luxemburg-Casco High School Tuesday, the Lady Spartans of Luxemburg-Casco prevailed over a determined Algoma Wolves team 46-38 in non-conference girls’ basketball.

The game started slowly as Algoma led 2-0 in the first three minutes, only to see Luxemburg-Casco score seven straight points to take a 7-2 lead.  The Wolves responded with five straight to tie it up and set the stage for a see-saw affair all night long.

Both teams battled turnovers forced by full-court pressure but managed to be tied at 18-18 with one minute left in the half when the Wolves scored five straight to go into intermission with a 23-18 lead.

In the second half, the Spartans and Wolves fought hard and the game stayed close until the final three minutes.  Key free throws by Maggie Hanmann and a clutch three-pointer by Gabby Wech sealed the game for the Spartans.

Taylor Thiry led the Spartans with 13 points, while Hanmann added 12 and Wech chipped in 11.

Algoma was led by Ryley Zimmerman with 13 points and Halle Panger’s 12 points before she fouled out.

The game featured Algoma Coach Mark Zastrow coaching against his former star player Taylor Braedel-Schmidt.  It was also the first time Algoma and L-C played against each other since 2014.

An emotional halftime program called “Take Down Cancer” had both teams remain on the court as the communities of Algoma and Luxemburg-Casco came together to help raise awareness and funds for families fighting cancer.  Names of people impacted by cancer were read and over $2500 was raised during a one-minute fundraiser in the stands.

The next broadcast on 96.7FM WBDK and New Radio Sports Network will be on Friday night as the Luxemburg-Casco boys host the Wrightstown Tigers.  Matt Pielser and Paul Schmitt will have the call starting at 6:35 with tip-off shortly after 7 pm.
