The undefeated Luxemburg-Casco Spartans claimed at least a share of the North Eastern Conference title on Friday night with a 28-10 win over the Freedom Irish. The Spartans controlled the ball and used a stingy defense to prevail.
Luxemburg-Casco struck first on a 1-yard run by running back Isaac VandenBush with 2:28 left in the first quarter to give the Spartans a 7-0 lead. Quarterback Owen Deprez followed that up with an 11-yard run with 2:04 left in the second quarter to extend the Spartan lead to 14-0.
Freedom was able to score a field goal with under a minute in the half to cut the L-C lead to 14-3 at halftime. The Irish were able to cut the lead early in the third quarter on a 47-yard pass completion to make the score 14-10, but the Spartans responded on their next possession as VandenBush scored on a 10-yard run with 7:05 left in the third quarter to take a 21-10 lead.
Deprez capped off the scoring with a 5-yard run with 8:11 left in the game to seal the victory for the Spartans.
The Spartans (6-0, 8-0 overall) can clinch an outright conference title with a win over Denmark at home next Friday. Matt Piesler and Paul Schmitt will have the call starting at 6:30 p.m. with the pregame show and kick-off set for 7 pm on 96.7FM WBDK.
