The Kewaunee Storm girls basketball team sits one win away from an outright Packerland Conference championship after beating its rival Algoma 50-36.
The two sides played a tight first half as the Storm held a slim 25-24 lead at the break. That's when the Storm's defense shined as they allowed just 12 points the rest of the way, eight of which came from Algoma's Bristol Schmidt. Gabby Stangel led the second half revival with seven of her 11 points coming after the break. Lilly Morton led the Storm with 12 points, followed by Stangel's 11 and 10 points from Jade Kroll. Schmidt led the Wolves with 12 points while Sierra Slaby pitched in nine points and Brooke Mattson chipped in five points.
The Storm are back in action on Friday night to face Peshtigo. A win will give them a one-game edge over Sevastopol and a chance to win the Packerland Conference outright. The Bulldogs lost to the Pioneers 60-29 on Thursday night with Athena Powers the leading scorer with six points. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
