A put-back basket with 3.8 seconds left in overtime lifted the #4 Valders Vikings to a 41-40 regional championship upset win over the #1 Kewaunee Storm on Saturday night.
Claire Zipperer rebounded a missed shot and banked home the game-winner as Valders (21-5) will now advance to the sectional semi-finals in Sheboygan next Thursday.
The Storm started out strong taking a 14-4 lead in the first eight minutes, only to see the Vikings go on a 10-0 run to tie up the game at 14-14. A three-pointer by Jade Kroll with 18 seconds left gave the Storm an 18-14 going into halftime.
The second half was a see-saw affair, with Valders going on an 11-2 run to open the half to take a 25-20 before Braelyn Chevalier came up with five points and a couple of steals to tie the game at 25-25.
The regulation came down to Valders missing a shot at the buzzer to send the game into overtime at 37-37.
In overtime, the Storm would take a 40-37 lead before Valders cut the lead down to one with under two minutes to go. After two time-outs, the Vikings would get the deciding basket after a missed floater by Megan Hochkammer in the lane that Zipperer put back in for the game-clincher. A desperation 30-footer by Gabby Stangel was long, and Valders came away with the hard-fought victory over the Storm.
Jade Kroll led the Storm with 18 points, while Zoey Siders hit four three-pointers for 12 points to lead Valders in scoring.
Kewaunee finishes the season at 23-2 and will reload as they return all their players for next season except for senior Rylee Dax.
