Kewaunee falls in a nailbiter to Valders

The Kewaunee Storm girls’ basketball team lost in a nailbiter to the Valders Vikings on Tuesday night, 45-44. The Storm came into the non-conference matchup 1-1 overall and 0-1 in non-conference play.

Claire Kohnle and Mykenzi Uhlers started the game with back-to-back three-point shots to take an early lead for Kewaunee. The Storm held a slim lead through the majority of the first half until the game saw a lead change at the 8 minute mark to put Valders ahead 14-12. Kewaunee’s Taylor Schleis dropped 12 points in the first half to provide her team a four-point lead going into halftime, 24-20. Second half play started scoreless throughout the first three minutes until Valders threw up a lay-up to bring the game within two points. Uhlers drilled back-to-back shots from deep to give the Storm a lead, 36-33. Down the stretch Kewaunee applied an aggressive defensive press that gave the Storm a temporary lead until Emma Brunmeier of the Vikings lofted a shot with four seconds left of play to go ahead and solidify a Vikings victory. Schleis led all scorers in the game with 15 points and will lead her Kewaunee team into Christmas break with a 1-2 record. Kewaunee will face the Oconto Blue Devils next Monday for a conference matchup at 7pm on the road.
