Gibraltar opened the doors to its new competition gym Tuesday night, and the Vikings gave the community plenty to celebrate with a 3-0 sweep of Providence Academy.

The night began with some early technical issues, but Gibraltar and the community quickly found a way to bring the opening of the new facility together, joining for the national anthem before getting down to business on the court. The new gym features a new competition floor and digital scoreboards, giving the Vikings a new home to show off.

Gibraltar took control early, winning the opening set 25-18 before cruising to a 25-12 victory in the second. The Paladins made things interesting in the third, taking a 23-22 lead and putting the Vikings' sweep in jeopardy.

Gibraltar responded when it mattered most, closing the set on a 3-0 run to take the third 25-23 and finish the night with a clean sweep.

The Vikings were led by Ella Clarke (13 kills, 3 blocks, .556 hitting efficiency), Aileen Torres (7 kills, 7 aces, 6 digs), Isla Fagundes (26 assists, 4 aces, 7 digs), Ema Collak (6 kills, 2 aces).

 

Head coach Lauren Ward was proud that her team kept their focus on such a busy night for the district. "The Fagundes / Clarke (combo) was especially effective tonight, with Ella racking up 13 kills in a very efficient manner," said Ward. "Aileen Torres also came alive on the service line and played very well all the way around. Everyone on the roster saw the court tonight, and that's always a win as well. As we head into the end of the season, it's great to have wins like tonight which reflect all of the hard work and effort the team has put in."

 

The win moves the Vikings to 12-10 on the season. Gibraltar will return to action Thursday, Oct. 1, when it travels to Southern Door for a 7 p.m. first serve.
