Gibraltar's Jauregui looks to end freshman campaign on a high note

Not all freshman have the impact Gibraltar's Azucena Jauregui has had on her teams this year, but then again, not all freshmen are like Azucena Jauregui.

After earning a spot on the Vikings' varsity volleyball team and earning All-Packerland Conference honors during the basketball season despite battling injuries, Jauregui earned her spot at the WIAA State Track and Field Meet in LaCrosse this weekend in the 300M hurdles with a time of 48.88. That is one second faster than she ran earlier in the week in the WIAA Regional and approximately five seconds faster than her first try at the event in April at Algoma. The combination of going the distance at that speed with hurdles in between has been tough for Jauregui, especially the final 100 meters.

Jauregui not only was All-Conference for basketball, she was also All-Packerland for the 300m high hurdles (Honorable Mention), 4x200m relay (1st Team) and the 4x100m relay (Honorable Mention). She is grateful for the success after putting in a lot of hard work the entire school year.

Jauregui, along with other athletes from across Door and Kewaunee counties, will make their way over to LaCrosse Thursday for the start of the WIAA State Track and Field Meet on Friday with most events for Division 2 and 3 beginning at 3:30 p.m.

Gibraltar is hosting a send-off event for Jauregui at the school beginning at 10 a.m. while Southern Door will do the same for theirs at 10:45 a.m.
