Vikings out-slugged in season opener

Opening at the Woodside Athletic Complex in Mauston to start their season, Gibraltar took on a tough matchup in Hurley Friday afternoon. The Northstars wasted no time getting on the board and scored at least one run in all five innings played on their way to a 20-0 slaughter-rule win.

Gibraltar struggled to get their bats rolling as they tallied just 3 hits in the opener. Senior Olivia Digiorgio was on the mound for Hurley, striking out nine in 5 innings of work.

For the Vikings, Emilie Glocke got the start and ultimately took the loss in the opening game going 2 1/3 innings surrendering 7 runs (6 earned) on 5 hits and 4 walks. Gabi Solomon came on in relief for the final 2 2/3 innings. The pair struck out 7 combined.

While the Vikings struggled to find the zone, Hurley took advantage when they did, collecting 16 hits on the afternoon. Bella Derosso led the Northstars going 3-for-4 with 4 RBIs and 2 runs scored.

Gibraltar returns to the fields Saturday facing Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah at 9:30am and Cameron at 1 pm to round out their weekend three game set.
