The Columbus Catholic Dons batted around and then some in the bottom of the third to beat Gibraltar/Washington Island in the Vikings' season opener 16-6.
The two teams matched each other two runs in the first inning. Pam Prescott took advantage of two passed balls after she singled to score from third on an Emile Glocke groundout. Isla Fagundes' ground drove in Courtney Foy for the other run. The Vikings' bats fell silent after that before the Dons strutted 16 batters to the plate in the fatal third inning. The Dons clubbed a home run and two triples in the frame but also scored on four Vikings errors. After the Dons added three more runs in the fourth inning, the Vikings stated their case for extending the game. After Kylie Kwaterski drove in one run on a pop-out, Addison Richmond doubled home two runs, and Mia Glocke drew a bases-loaded walk to get the deficit to within 10 runs. A strikeout ended the game, entering the bottom of the fifth inning. Emilie Glocke took the loss, allowing 13 runs (three earned) on eight hits and five walks while striking out seven.
