Viking girls survive Blazers comeback on 105.1 The GOAT

The Gibraltar Vikings broke a pair of long losing streaks Friday night as they snuck past the NEW Lutheran Blazers 34-33 in Packerland Girls Basketball action.

Both teams hassled each other up and down the court, making it hard for even their most talented shooters to hit shots in rhythm. The Blazers' defensive plans were the most staunch against Mikala Gorham, who scored just one point just days after leading the Vikings in scoring against Kewaunee. Lexi Meerstein eventually broke through the Vikings' defense, scoring five straight points as she was able to help give the Blazers an 18-15 advantage at the break.

Andie Schar picked up the Vikings' offense in the second to lead the comeback, knocking down three three-pointers and another bucket en route to a game-high 19-point game. The Vikings led by as much as six points late, but missed free throws allowed the Blazers to add some drama at the end of the contest. Meerstein's missed free throw and subsequent rebound put the game on ice for the Vikings, who won their first game against the Blazers anywhere in five years and the first time they did so in Green Bay in about a decade. Helping Schar on offense was McKailey Reisen's six points from the free throw line and four points from Chloe Alexander with four points. Three others scored at least one point. Meerstein and Ingrid Beaumont combined for 26 of the Blazers' 33 points.
