Gibraltar High School

Lecy, Friedenfels named Gibraltar's senior athletes of the year

Will Friedenfels and Betsy Lecy have left their mark on Gibraltar athletics, and that fact was confirmed last month during the school's senior awards.

Lecy and Friedenfels were named the senior female and male athletes of the year after a successful four-year career at Gibraltar. Both athletes recently received recognition from the Packerland Conference as scholar-athlete award winners, joining classmates Garrett Voight and Colleen Carlisle.

During his senior year, Friedenfels earned all-conference recognition in football, basketball, and baseball despite nursing a hand injury that cost him the last few weeks of the football season and the first two months of the basketball season. Friedenfels was a part of two of the most successful seasons of Vikings basketball, playing in two sectional championship games which resulted in one appearance in the state tournament. Friedenfels will continue his educational and basketball careers at St. Norbert College.

Lecy entered the record books last fall when she ran a time of 21:34 at the Packerland Conference, breaking the previous school record by 22 seconds. She celebrated breaking the record by, well, breaking records. Lecy was also one of the basketball team's sharpest shooters from behind the arc and an important leader on the track team. In addition to the previously mentioned scholar-athlete award, she also earned an outstanding achievement award for earning at least seven varsity letters, have a GPA of at least 3.9, and was a three-sport athlete their junior and senior years. Lecy will continue her education at Northwestern University.
