Second half dooms Vikings girls upset bid, battle Oconto Tuesday

The Gibraltar girls basketball team held a four-point halftime lead against their county rivals before Sevastopol cruised to a 60-35 win.

 

The Vikings outscored the Pioneers 24-20 in the first half, sending the struggling squad into the locker room with confidence against one of the conference's better teams. Andie Schar score nine of her team-high 14 points in the game's opening frame while the Vikings defense only allowed three Pioneers to score.

 

The Pioneers quickly turned the tide in the second half as Bailey Rikkola scored 12 of her game-high 21 points and Kayla Ranly added 8 of her 10 after the break as the they outscored the Vikings 40-11. The Vikings only managed four shots made from the field in the second half.

 

Both teams will hit the road and play on short rest as the Vikings play at Oconto and the Pioneers battle at Sturgeon Bay. 

 

The Blue Devils have been the Packerland Conference's best team at 11-0 and 18-0 overall. A big reason for that is Lianna Baxter, who is averaging more than 18 points a game and 10 rebounds a game.
