Many athletes make a jump in performance from one year to the next when they are given an opportunity, and then there is Algoma football's Ethan Melotte.
Melotte went from rushing for 125 yards on 16 carries to accumulating 825 yards on 125 carries, in addition to throwing for another 472 yards and accumulating 18 total touchdowns (7 passing, 11 rushing). A big reason why was the talented depth chart ahead of him with two seniors at quarterback and three seniors leading the way rushing the ball. He was rewarded for his patience and the talent he showed once he was given the opportunity, going from the bench to a unanimous selection on the All-Packerland-8 First Team as a running back. Melotte admits that it was tough going at first as he learned the offense from the quarterback chair, but credits the coaching staff and his teammates for helping him with the transition.
Melotte is now preparing for the basketball season, which will host its first practice on November 16th. Melotte, who also runs track and field at Algoma, says his favorite part of competing at school is being able to do so with his friends.
