In a battle of two ranked teams, the Algoma football team suffered their first loss of the season on Friday, falling to Valley Christian 31-14.

 

Trailing 14-6 after the first quarter, the Wolves allowed the Warriors to score 10 unanswered points to lead 24-6 at the break. The Wolves outscored the Warriors 8-7 in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit. Head coach Wade Vandervest said after the game that the team made too many mistakes to overcome a quality opponent. 

 

For the Wolves, Ethan Melotte was limited to just 12 yards through the air and had to work hard to gain 79 yards on 26 carries without a score. Jacob Blahnik rushed for 78 yards and a score, while Jack Meverden scored the other on 44 yards rushing. Brady Walker led the defense with 14 tackles and a sack.

 

For the Warriors, Mason Everts had 33 yards through the air and another 18 on the ground, giving the keys of the offense to Sam Gloudemans, who rushed for 148 yards on 26 carries and three touchdowns. Noah Ekholm added 83 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

 

The Wolves are back in action on Friday when they host 3-1 NEW Lutheran at Perry Park at 7 p.m.
