Lischka breaks record, Algoma outlasts Spartans on 104.1 WRLU

History was made in a grueling battle of Kewaunee County foes, as Algoma traveled to Luxemburg Casco, and outlasted the Spartans in an overtime clash, winning 64-63 as heard on 104.1 WRLU.

The two teams traded baskets in the early going, with neither team getting out to more than a five point lead through the opening half. Algoma grabbed the early advantage as Braeden Leist and Griffin Robinson were sharp from behind the arc to open the contest.  Eli Derenne helped draw the game even for Luxemburg Casco. As the half continued, the Spartans jumped in front, prior to Parker Lischka going on a run to tighten the game up.  Lischka, chasing Algoma’s all time scoring record, tied the mark and then hit a 3 to move all alone into first.

Lischka threw down a dunk on Algoma’s next possession to tie the game late in the first half.  Luxemburg Casco would get a late bucket to take a 30-28 lead into the locker room.

The Wolves grabbed the lead back early in the half prior to Bryce Piesler hitting some big 3s to put LC back in front.  The Spartans would build the lead up to as much as 7 until Algoma would come storming back.  Leist would go on to score 12 second half points to tie the game late and put Algoma back in front. The Spartans were able to knot things back up, and had a shot at the buzzer to win, but a Mason Trimberger layup came up short as time expired.

In the extra period, Algoma relied on Aidan Zeitler and Leist to build an advantage. Leist would go 7 of 8 from the free throw line to try to put the Spartans away. Ethan Ropson kept the Spartans close, but it was Algoma in front in the final minute. Mason Burmeister hit a three in the final seconds, but Algoma did not have to inbound the ball, as the Spartans were out of timeouts and couldn’t foul in time to stop the clock.

Leist led all scorers with 26 points, and got 20 points from Lischka in his history making night.  For the Spartans, Piesler led the way with 18 points, and got 16 from Ropson in the losing effort.

Luxemburg Casco will be off for the next week, and get back in action next week when they face Green Bay Southwest in the Shawano Hoops Holiday Classic at the Kress Center on December 30th.  Algoma will be back in action on the same day in a nonconference matchup, hosting the Denmark Vikings.
