They needed 11 runs, 15 hits, and five Pioneers errors to do it, but Algoma softball earned the hard-fought 11-9 win in 10 innings Tuesday night.
The Wolves took a 4-0 lead before the Pioneers whittled it down and forced extra innings in the seventh inning when Naomi Rikkola left the yard with the solo shot. Macie Zimmerman and Nora Krause gave the Wolves the lead in the ninth, only to see it slip in the bottom of the frame when Addison Schauske's run-scoring double was followed up by a Sienna Cain homer to tie the game again. Zimmerman capped off a three run rally with a homer to give the lead back to Wolves in the 10th inning. The Pioneers would get one of those runs back on a lead-off homer by Brynn Schartner, but would leave the tying run at the plate to end the game.
For the Wolves, Krause went 4-6 with two RBI while Zimmerman, Brooke Mattson, Natalie Ray, and Jadyn Nellis all had two hits. Zimmerman went the full 10 innings, allowing nine runs (9 ER) on 13 hits and five walks while striking out 13. The Pioneers were led by Ranly, Rikkola, Schauske, Cain, and Sadie Rikkola, who all had two hits and combined to drive in seven of the nine RBI. Leah Schopf took the loss in the circle, allowing 11 runs (7 ER) on 15 hits while striking out seven.
