Wolves baseball advances with win over Indians

The Algoma Wolves' season will continue thanks to a 7-3 win over Weyauwega-Fremont in Thursday's opening round of the WIAA Baseball Tournament.

 

Algoma got on the board early with two runs in the first with a 2 RBI single by Jordan Fenendael. In the 2nd, Chase Romdenne got on an error, stole 2nd, and Carson Leist singled to left, scoring Romdenne. The Warhawks scratched across 1 in the third on an unearned run. 

 

Algoma countered with 3 in the 3rd. Braeden Leist singled to lead off the bottom of the 4th, stole 2nd, and advanced to third on an error. Fenendael's hard-hit ball scored Leist from third. Algoma would load the bases, scoring two on a walk and a past ball. Grant Vandervest finished the scoring by drawing a bases-loaded walk, scoring Fenendael.

The bottom of the fourth was similar to the third. Braeden Leist singled, stole second, and advanced to third on a play. Fenendael struck out swinging, but the passed ball scored Leist from third. The team was leading 7-1 after 5.

 

W-F would add single tallies in the 6th and 7th but a strikeout looking by pinch hitter Jason Hansen with the bases loaded in the top of the 7th, securing the win for the Wolves.

 

Algoma advances to play the 5th-seeded Brillion Lions, who advanced by beating 13th-seeded Manawa 12-2 on Tuesday in Brillion. 

 

Also, with a win by the Gibraltar Vikings over Kewaunee, Algoma shares the Packerland Conference Championship for the 1st time since 2009
