Algoma High School

Algoma football takes on Lena/St. Thomas Academy

After toppling one tough opponent last weekend, the Algoma football will try to duplicate that success again Friday night against state-ranked Lena/St. Thomas Academy.

Last week, the Wolves blitzed the Gillett Tigers 54-37 in Peninsula Conference football at Perry Field. Algoma quarterback Grant Vandervest ran for four touchdowns and returned a kick-off 90 yards for another score to pace the Wolves. Vandervest made the "play of the game" with a spectacular 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to close out the scoring for Algoma with 10:54 left in the fourth quarter. Gillett (3-1) and Wolves emptied the benches and the Tigers scored two times in the final seven minutes to make the score closer than the final scoreboard as Algoma was never challenged for most of the evening.

The Titans throttled Suring last week 57-0 to improve to 4-0 on the season with two shutouts. Calvin Peters rushed for 131 yards and three touchdowns and threw another long score in the rout that also saw Tyler Shallow rush for over 100 yards.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Lena High School.
