Algoma runs over Gillett on 104.1 WRLU

The Algoma Wolves blitzed the Gillett Tigers 54-37 Friday night in Peninsula Conference football at Perry Field.

Algoma quarterback Grant Vandervest ran for four touchdowns and returned a kick-off 90 yards for another score to pace the Wolves.

In the home opener for Algoma, Parker Lischka started the scoring with an electrifying 51-yard run with 9:59 left in the first quarter.  Gillett would respond with an 18-yard touchdown pass from Jesse DeBauch to Nathan Rowell and the score was tied at 8-8.

Algoma would get a 46-yard touchdown run by Vandervest to make it 16-8 after one quarter.

After a turnover by Gillett, Algoma would score on a 36-yard scamper by Lischka, and the two-point conversion would make it 24-8 with 6:42 left in the half.

Algoma would dodge a bullet when Joey Cavino got his second interception of the half on a tipped pass at the goal line, preventing a Tiger score.

The Wolves carried the momentum into the second half with a 26-yard run by Lischka and a 31-yard scramble for a score by Vandervest making the score 40-8.

Vandervest made the "play of the game" with a spectacular 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to close out the scoring for Algoma with 10:54 left in the fourth quarter.

Gillett (3-1) and Wolves emptied the benches and the Tigers scored two times in the final seven minutes to make the score closer than the final scoreboard as Algoma was never challenged for most of the evening.

Algoma (2-1) will now play Lena next Friday.
